The wild Baffle Creek spared from dam plans - 04/03/08

In a rapid victory for the environment, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has unequivocally ruled out a dam on the pristine Baffle Creek. This comes just days after The Wilderness Society and Queensland Conservation raised the alarm bells about apparent Government plans for a dam on this wild river, as part of water planning processes for the area.

Like the rivers of Cape York Peninsula and the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Baffle Creek is a river system in remarkably good condition. Located on the east coast between Gladstone and Bundaberg, only 1% of flows are extracted, a large proportion of the catchment is in natural condition and any fisherman will tell you of the value of the commercial and recreational fishery.

Placing a dam on the Baffle Creek would decimate these fisheries and remove tens of millions of dollars from the local economy each year.

The local community is united in seeking to protect this gem of the east coast. The Wilderness Society will continue to advocate for the long-term protection of the Baffle Creek, including legal protection under Queensland’s Wild Rivers Act in the future.
