Queensland Premier flooded with letters in support of Wild River protection - 16/01/08

by Glenn Walker last modified 2008-01-17 10:52

The Premier’s electorate office in the West End was today deluged with 2300 letters urging her to honour her Government’s commitment to protect Cape York Peninsula’s wild rivers. Delivered by The Wilderness Society (TWS), the letters come from a wide variety of concerned Queenslanders including residents from Cape York and a large proportion of the Premiers own electorate.

Glenn Walker, Wild Rivers Campaigner for TWS said: “In 2004, the Queensland Government promised to protect Queensland's wild rivers. They indicated that thirteen free flowing river systems on Cape York Peninsula would be nominated for wild river protection. Four years later, these rivers remain unprotected.”

The Queensland Government passed special Wild Rivers legislation in 2005 to protect Queensland’s remaining free flowing rivers. Six other rivers in the state have now been protected.

“Cape York Peninsula is one of the last great wild places on Earth. Its magnificent rivers are the lifeblood for the Cape’s communities and for an amazing diversity of wildlife. With many of Australia’s rivers so badly degraded, it is vital we protect these remaining free flowing rivers, at the same time as supporting ecologically sustainable development” said Mr Walker.

The Premier will also receive hundreds of emails over the coming days with the same message, as part of a “cyber-action” campaign by TWS.

“Many residents of Cape York Peninsula want to see these rivers protected. The time is right for Government leadership” concluded Mr Walker.
